The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.armenianchurchwd.com\/\">Western Diocese<\/a>, consisting of the above western states, was constituted in 1928. There are 63 organized and mission parishes in the Eastern Diocese. A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.armenianchurch.ca\/\">third diocese<\/a>\u00a0governs all of Canada.<\/p>\n<p>The head of the Eastern Diocese is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/armenianchurch.us\/primate\/\">Primate<\/a>\u2014currently His Grace Bishop Daniel Findikyan\u2014who is elected by clerical and lay representatives of the parishes at the\u00a0Diocesan Assembly, which meets annually. The Primate is president of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/armenianchurch.us\/leadership\/\">Diocesan Council<\/a>, consisting of lay and clerical members, which governs the affairs of the Diocese.<\/p>\n<p>Bishop Daniel\u00a0presides over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/armenianchurch.us\/cathedralhistory\/\">St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral<\/a>\u00a0in New York City. The Cathedral, consecrated in April 1968 by the late Catholicos Vasken I, resembles the world's first cruciform church, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/armenianchurch.us\/etchmiadzin\/\">Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin<\/a>, built in the 4th century near Yerevan, Armenia.<\/p>\n<p>Adjacent to the St. Vartan Cathedral is the three-story Gulbenkian Cultural Center and Diocesan House. The complex includes a cultural center, museum, library, religious and language departments, office and meeting rooms and various other facilities.
